Raymond Yakoro is an officer in the Special Forces Unit of the Central African Republic Army. Hired for protection from poachers and wildlife, he was our soldier—an integral and wonderful part of the trip. I called him our personal Rambo. He carried an AK-47 at all times.

Here Raymond is in full battle regalia, looking tough. For most of the trip, though, he wore sweatpants and a T-shirt. But we won't tell anyone that.
