Bruce Hayse, the leader of the expedition, scouts the best line through a high Class III or low Class IV rapid, the largest we'd encountered.

To the best of anyone's knowledge, the Chinko had never been run. Certainly we were the first non-Africans to descend the river. People lived downstream. But they used pirogues, wooden boats that probably couldn't make it through this rapid.
