"Here we are crossing the Galana River at about 6 a.m. There are a lot of crocs and hippos in the water. But if you stay together, you can give them the idea that you are one big creature—an elephant, for example—and frighten them. If you’re a lone figure, they’ll come get you, which made it a little discomfiting to leave the group to take this picture.
"Armed rangers from the Kenya Wildlife Service accompanied our group to protect us from wildlife. But they didn’t even know how to hold their rifles. If anything had happened, it would have been a disaster."
