I took this picture during our first visit to Trongsa, before the start of our trek. This is Pema in her shop. Some Bhutanese artifacts are hanging from the ceiling.
Writer Jeff Greenwald made friends with Pema the evening before. I met her the next morning and was also charmed. We practiced the three Bhutanese essentials with her: "Kusuzampolahello", "Kadinchelathank you", and "Yak leh hem donice yak cheese".

I use my fetish 24mm lens very often. It forces me to get involved with my subject, to learn their language and behavior. It's a social lens. I also used a tiny, foldable reflector to bounce the morning sunlight and light in her face. I hate flash!
