This was a little town outside of Colón. My purpose when I photograph is to gain as honest a perspective of a place as possible, and I try to do that through connecting with the people who live there.

We were driving through the back streets of a little town across Manzanillo Bay from the port of Colón. This is not, supposedly, the best place to be driving around. I just hopped out of the car to shoot these kids playing basketball, and [writer] Chris [Cox] stayed in the car, with the engine running.

The kids were very receptive—this boy was one of about ten kids. But then a couple of their elder brothers got curious about what we were doing. We wound up feeling we had overstayed our welcome and it was time to go. I think when you're in places you're not really sure of, you have to go with your gut feeling.

I wanted to get a little bit of motion in this shot without having the boy be totally blurred, so I used a relatively quick shutter speed to stop him—but slow enough to get a sense of motion.
