Your Climbing Queries
Q: |
I'd just like to find out how you go about funding your
expeditions. As a journalist in South Africa, I've had a few
expeditions in mind here but am not sure how to go about organizing
them financially. I would appreciate your advice.

Michael,
You've hit upon what is actually the crux of any adventure.
Thinking up and going on trips is a breeze compared to finding the money
to make it happen. I fund my expeditions through a combination of
sponsorships from equipment and media companies. My major sponsor is
The North Face. In exchange for helping to finance my trips, I will test out
new products and supply detailed trial reports, in addition to bringing back
good stories and photos. I usually write stories for magazines about my
adventures, and most of the time I set these deals up before leaving. I have
often worked with television and film on many expeditions, as a
cameraman, rigger, and climbing talent. In other words, if you want
someone to give you money to go on an adventure, you have to offer
something in return. Setting this up beforehand comes down to
salesmanship: You're selling yourself and your trip. There are a
million opportunities out there. It is up to you to seek them out and then
don't take "no" for an answer. If you commit
110% and work it as hard as you can, I'm sure you can pull it
off. Good luck!
