This is called Skeleton 13—they numbered all the skeletons—and she's in a chamber in the back of the cave. ... She's lying in a pool that is wet during the wet season and dry most of the other times, so she has rock buildup on her. I have a light and a big softbox up on the side. My assistant's helping me take pictures, and the guide who's with me is quietly snoring in the background, because we shot this at about one o'clock in the morning. She's articulated like that because of water action; this pool will fill up full of water during the wet season. She was almost certainly a sacrifice to the god of the underworld, Chac. She was left in a place where water would be when it starts raining. Apparently they would leave people where they wanted water to fill up; they wanted the god of the underworld to come and give them rain. —Photographer Stephen Alvarez
