The 600-plus-mile [966-plus-kilometer] trip from Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada, to Glacier National Park in Montana traverses some of North America's most revered landscapes and practically promises up-close sightings of grizzlies, bighorn sheep, and the ubiquitous windshield tourists.
Photographer Anne Sherwood traveled the route last summer to shoot the July 2002 Adventure article, “The Monster Tour.” Anne photographed writer Charles Graeber and his companion, Robin Petravic, on their three-week bike odyssey. Then she conquered the route herself by bike and car in just eight days.
Armed with three cameras and lenses, one external flash, and 80 rolls of film, Anne had to see everything Charlie did during his three weeks in the saddleall at the same time of day. Says Anne, “It was like a scavenger hunt. We had a map with all these places circled where we had to go.”
