America's Top Mountain Bike Trek

In the Colorado Rockies, halfway between Telluride and the Last Dollar Hut

"I wanted to draw attention to the collection of old houses and buildings at the bend in the road. These worn buildings were nothing like the massive, nouveaux-Western houses that surround them, but they represent an old, authentic Colorado that I really like."

—Photographer Steve Casimiro

Photography Notes

  • Film: Kodak Portra 160 NC
  • Camera: Canon EOS-3
  • Lens: 20-35mm, shot at 20mm
  • Shutter speed: 1/500
  • Aperture: f/8
  • Time of day: 6:30 p.m.

"There are a couple of aspects of this photo that are deliberate. The road converges just a little bit off center—a typical practice in photography. I positioned my friend Sinuhe's helmet so that it was perfectly centered within the borders of the road.

"If you had no rider, your eye would be led slowly to the house by the light red road. With Sinuhe there, looking in that direction, the viewer's eye moves more quickly through the photo."
