My (Almost) Private Patagonia

Hiking amid the ciruelillos

"We had to walk to Lago Leones through this really interesting terrain of moss and lichen-encrusted rocks. It was a nice spring walk where your feet would sink into the ground a little as you passed. Every now and again there were these beautiful red ciruelillo trees that would just pop out against the stark landscape."

—Photographer David McLain

Photography Notes

  • Camera: 35mm Canon EOS
  • Film: 100 ISO
  • Lens: 50mm
  • Shutter speed: 1/125
  • Aperture: f/5.6
  • Time of day: afternoon

"It's challenging to shoot pictures that give the viewer a sense of place from a first person perspective that aren't also really boring. The tree was a vehicle to spice up the composition. The tree frames the hiker, and I also like how his red jacket plays off the ciruelillo flowers."
