Rock Tour: Guide Gembong Nurrasa admires a lump of ejecta while trekking up Anak Krakatau
"Here, our guide Gembong is holding a big lump of ejectathis looks like pumice. As you walk up Krakatoa, there are thousands of great lumps of this stuff. Even though it looks heavy, this rock is actually very light due to the air trapped inside the lava as it cooled."

"This is second day on Krakatoa. The first day we'd climbed up Krakatoa with Jamie and did more of the journalistic-type shots. Then I went back with our guide to set up shots that captured what it's like to ascend the cone. With large format photography, it's very difficult to spontaneously shoot something in the moment, Cartier-Bresson style. However, by setting up the shots, I can control most of the components and try to create images that represent the experiences from our journey.
"I asked the guide to hold the ejecta to give a sense of scale to the photo. A short depth field is used to direct the eye to the rock."
