Thailand's Toxic Caves
Long Day's Journey: Hiking to Porky Pit

"We're hiking to Porky Pit. Maria has the rope on her back, and a cave pack with gear. The thing that looks like a violin case is actually an oxygen tank. Tim is in the middle, also carrying a cave pack. Richard Borowsky is in front.

"The rocks in the background are a perfect example of karst rock formations. The whole mountain is basically rock, but it's so easily corroded that water flow carves out the cavernous chambers—and sweeps vegetation into the caves that will eventually decay and turn into CO2.

"Sometimes the approach to a cave is quite long (this was only a couple hours), but it's easy to forget that even though you're caving in complete darkness, it really beautiful above ground."

"This is a classic on-the-fly shot. Throughout an assignment, you're always looking for your opener—something that will work as a double page spread in the magazine. You never really know which one it will be because it's such an editorial decision, but you want to at least provide some choices. I wanted to provide some underground and some above ground."
