Easy Rider: Writer Charles Graeber gallops along an empty beach in Cumbuco.
"After the whaling attempt, we traveled on to Cumbuco in northeastern Brazil. When we arrived at sunset, we were just getting oriented when two kids who couldn't have been more than seven or eight years old offered to rent us their horses to run down the beach. It seemed like a good way to get oriented and check out the dunes.
"We were about to return the horses when Charlie admitted that he really wanted to gallop. So he started running the horse up and down the empty stretch of sand. I was pretty impressed that he got the horse to go that fastand that he was able to stay on because he was riding it bareback."

"I set a slow shutter speed as Charlie was running toward me. Then, I panned the camera with his direction of motion. I wanted to get a sense of his speedthe rush of galloping down the beach and the little splash coming off the hooves.
"Practice helped make this shot. I was looking though the viewfinder as they approached. As they passed, I just kept the movement in the same part of the frameeven as he went byto create a smooth effect."
