Dharma Bums: In front of Chiu monastery, newly arrived pilgrims prepare for their three-day journey around Mount Kailas's outer kora.
"The overland route to Kailas from Kathmandu, Nepal, travels across the roof of the world, passing encampments of Tibetan yak herders, ancient monasteries, and pilgrims who often travel for weeks just to reach the holy mountain. Here, a group of Tibetan pilgrims load their canvas tents and other supplies into a Chinese flatbed truck for the final push to Darchen, at the base of Kailas.
"The previous evening, we had joined them in hanging Buddhist prayer flags from the peak above Chiu Monastery, which rises in the distance, dusted in early morning snow that will burn off later in the day."
