Alaska's Virgin Islands
Hit the Road BOB: Bike touring the Inside Passage is made easy with the help of sturdy trailers, as Contributing Editor Robert Earle Howells demonstrates on Lutak Road.

"I call this photo 'Bob with his BOB,' and it's an excellent example of how we got around: CamelBak for water with a trailer connected to the back axle. There's a shock on the back wheel, so we never really felt the potholes, curbs, or rocks. Climbing uphill, we noticed the weight of the BOB trailer. Going downhill, we felt like freight trains.

"After a full day of biking singletrack and kayaking Chilkoot Lake, we decided to hitch a ride in order to make our ferry. I stuck out my thumb for the first car coming down the road. Once we got in, we realized the driver, a local pastor, was taking his wife to the hospital after a nasty biking accident. He was concerned about his wife, but he was also concerned about us, even though we were strangers. Bob and I were humbled by his kindness, which is a common trait in Alaska locals."
