"Life's an Adventure" Reader Photo Album
Coming of Age: On a cultural-immersion trip in Morocco, Jeff Rothblum, 20, found henna-marked hands could make the struggle to communicate more interesting.
"After studying abroad in Ireland, a friend and I headed to Africa with the Morocco Exchange, an organization designed to familiarize students with the Islamic culture. While staying with our host families, we had to overcome many communication hurdles, often using hand gestures, since we didn't speak Arabic. Our friend Marisa Liang, a student at UC Berkeley, took this photo of a host mother in Rabat whose hands were beautifully marked with henna. By the end of our stay, many of the girls in the group had adorned their own hands with henna."
Jeff Rothblum, 20 Student, Iowa State University Buffalo Grove, Illinois
DIY: Most of the students with the Morocco Exchange are Americans studying in Spain. The four-day trip starts includes time in Tangiers, Rabat, and a day in the desert backcountry. For more information, go to www.moroccoexchange.com.
