Photo: A great white shark in South Africa
«  3 of 4 »

"On a fantastic holiday with my girlfriend Kate, we visited many amazing sights over ten days in  South Africa. One of the most memorable was diving with great white sharks off of Dyers Island in the Indian Ocean. Seeing my first great white was actually quite calming; it glided effortlessly through the water within a few feet [under a meter] from my submerged cage. Waterlogged, I dried off and took out my Canon EOS 300D to get some shark photos from the boat's deck. I was leaning half my body over the side of the boat when I heard some commotion from the men throwing chum. A shark was speeding toward the bait... and the boat! Suddenly, the shark's head emerged from the water. I kept my position because it did not appear as close in my lens as it actually was."

DIY: "We dove with Cape Town-based White Shark Diving (www.white-shark-diving.com). They will shuttle you to and from your hotel. Breakfast and lunch are provided. A DVD of your trip is available for purchase. Even if you're scared of sharks, you can get as much out of the day by just watching from the boat."
