Photo: Hot-Air ballooning in Egypt
«  4 of 4

"I took  a two-hour balloon trip over the Queen's Temple in Luxor, a neighborhood of Cairo, Egypt. Before long, the captain of the balloon and I got into an argument over American politics. 'I am the captain of this ship,' he said. 'If I throw you out of my balloon, no one will say anything!' There was a long silence. Then I said, 'That would be a bad idea since I haven't paid for the flight yet....' He laughed and said, 'Yes, pay first next time.' Despite the interpersonal drama, the ride was incredible. With the low hills and the Nile behind us, the height allowed us to get a more abstract view of Egypt. As we ascended above ancient temples, passing date orchards and fields of grain, barefoot boys ran along in the shadow of the balloon."

DIY:  "I loved the trip and also ended up loving my camera, the Canon Digital EOS Rebel. Balloon shots require thinking ahead to where you will be in a few minutes. The balloon is very stable but the lens I was using had IS (image stabilization), which helped to produce a sharp image."
