"We were about 18 days into a 30-day NOLS [National Outdoor Leadership School] Mountain Instructor course. This is David Van Wie, near the summit of an approximately 9,000-foot (2,743-meter) unnamed peak in the Alaska Range. I'm on the rope ahead of him snapping the photo. The other member of our rope team, Fredrick Norrsell, is belaying him. The climb wasn't especially technical, but a good model climb for one that NOLS instructors would likely take students on."
