"Over Labor Day in 2004, two friends and I enrolled in a two-day white-water kayaking course on New York's Sacandaga River, just north of Albany. Here, I was approaching Class III rapids in a kayak for the first time in my life. The white water was very intimidating at first, but soon the skills we learned became second nature. Conquering the rapids (and my fears) was just a giant rush! My friend Sean Ballard is paddling in the distance."

Do-It-Yourself: "Our course with Wild Waters Outdoor Center [www.wildwaters.net] was the perfect introduction for beginner paddlers. The clinic covered river outfitting, wet exits, boat control, reading white water, river running, and rescue. We first practiced our skills on a pond, then we proceeded to the river."
