"Trying to hug one of these trees is like a flea embracing an elephant—the scale is truly mind-blowing. On a spring hiking trip in Yosemite's Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias [www.nps.gov/yose], we were surrounded by the largest living things known to humans."

Do-It-Yourself: "Trees this grand deserve an extra effort. I highly recommend getting past the Lower Grove, which is closer to the parking lot and more trafficked by visitors, to explore the Upper Grove, where you can marvel at the giants all by yourself."
