Everyday Adventure Three of our favorite ways to bust out of the humdrum 1 Puma bike Folding bikes are saddled with an extremely high geek factor, but not the Puma Bike by Biomega ($775; www.puma .com). Its sleek, matte frame reeks of downtown and the overall BMX-ish shape is sporty and unconventional—pure Puma. The ride is comfortable, thanks to 24-inch wheels (larger than most foldables), and stopping is effortless, courtesy of cable-actuated disk brakes. Oh, and that unusual cable downtube? It doubles as the bike's lock. Very clever. One thing, though: Expect utility, not high performance; the bike is just for around-town use. 2 Garmin Nüvi There's no doubt that Garmin's Nüvi ($970; www.garmin.com) will win accolades as the coolest travel device ever. We love the combination of GPS navigation and a 17,000-word multiple-language translator, an MP3 player, a picture viewer, an audio book player, an SD memory card slot, and a currency converter. As if that weren't enough, the Nüvi is more petite than an automotive dash-top GPS, but its large screen is far more readable than a tiny backcountry unit. It is the only navigation system you'll ever need. 3 Pacific Outdoor Equipment solar messenger bag It almost doesn't matter that the Pacific Outdoor Equipment e-Vancouver messenger bag ($199; www.pacoutdoor.com) sports a large solar panel capable of recharging USB devices, because the thing is the absolute bomb: seamless, welded, waterproof, zippered, huge (1,350 cubic inches), and packed with more watertight compartments than a nuclear sub (actually, just four). But it does matter, because Pac Outdoor uses a "charge controller" that enables the solar panel to generate power in all light conditions. Rain or shine, you'll be juicing your gadgets off the grid. —S.C.
