2. The Daredevil Swedish skier Tomas Olsson, 30, summits May 16, but tumbles to his death down the Great Couloir during his descent. His Norwegian teammate, Tormod Granheim, 31, successfully skis down the Great Couloir.

3. The Carbon Climber On April 28 New Zealander Mark Inglis, 47, who lost his lower legs in a previous climbing accident, breaks a carbon-fiber prosthetic while on the North Col. After repairs he makes the summit on May 15.

4. The Playmate After sipping some tea at Camp IV, Polish Playmate and television journalist Martyna Wojciechowska, 31, climbs to the top on May 18.

5. The Survivor Australian climber Lincoln Hall, 50, is found by a team of four, led by American Dan Mazur, 45, after spending the night alone at 28,000 feet (8,534 meters). The disoriented Hall believes he is on a ship and attempts to go overboard, down the Kangshung Face.

6. The Abandoned After apparently topping out on May 14, British climber
David Sharp, 34, dies of exposure by May 16. A reported 40 climbers pass him en route to the summit.

7. The Sherpas At 7:30 a.m. on April 21, a collapsing ice tower in the notoriously dangerous Khumbu Icefall kills Ang Phinjo Sherpa, Lhakpa Tseri Sherpa, and Dawa Temba Sherpa. The hired Sherpas were establishing fixed lines.
