Americans on Everest Expedition 2012

View Images

FPO !! Our 2012 expedition to Everest seeks to repeat the historic climb of the 1963 National Geographic-sponsored American Mount Everest Expedition, almost 50 years after that first American ascent to the summit. Mountaineer Conrad Anker and photographer Cory Richards will climb the West Ridge route in the alpine style, carrying all their own food, shelter, and equipment, without use of supplemental oxygen.

A second team, composed of scientists and researchers from Montana State University—and National Geographic writer Mark Jenkins—will climb the mountain’s Southeastern Ridge in expedition style, using fixed ropes, stocked camps, help from porters, and supplemental oxygen.

Real-time updates from Mark Jenkins and the West Ridge team as well as additional exclusive coverage will start April 15 in the National Geographic Magazine App for iPad. FPO !!
