Whenever you travel, you're like a first-time parent at a first birthday party: You want to film it all. The Canon HV20 ($1,100; www.canonusa.com) shoots full HD video on MiniDV tapes. At 2.6 by 1.9 inches (7 by 5 centimeters), the tapes are larger than memory cards but deliver superior video quality and cost far less. While a typical 40-minute card starts at $50, a one-hour MiniDV tape sets you back . . . a couple of bucks.

Inside: a 60-gigabyte hard drive with room for five hours of full hi-def video and three image sensors to ensure accurate color reproduction. At 24 ounces (680 grams), it's not the most portable choice, but the extra weight will keep your hands rock-steady and send you home feeling like Ken Burns.
