1. Trail Boss
Tiny footwear manufacturer Ahnu only launched this year, but so far so good: The waterproof-breathable Ahnu Norden Mid ($120; www.ahnufootwear.com) is a solid light hiker with a full-length shank to buffer shocks.
2. Pace Setter
Europeans have long embraced Aigle's trail shoes, but the French company's technical footwear only recently made it to the States. The Aigle Wind Rush ($159; www.aigleboots.com) melds hiking and trail-running features on a light, nimble chassis.
3. Shape Shifter
The GoLite Storm Dragon ($130; www.golite.com/footwear) has turned off-road running inside out, literally. Its soft, flexible treads conform to trails better than traditional stiff outsoles.
3. Foot Warmer
Soft and fleecy on the inside, the Miōn Warm Canyon ($130; www.mionfootwear.com) is a toasty après-boating booty with an outsole that's beefy enough to handle the hike in.
4. Crag Rat
A supportive midsole and sticky rubber tread make the Kayland Crux Grip ($100; www.kayland.com) is a sturdy approach shoe for heavy loads. Look for more from this Italian brand as it builds its U.S. presence in the coming months.
