1. The Businessman

The Quiksilver Premium Carry On ($550; www.quiksilver.com) is a surprisingly urbane luggage offering from a surfwear brand, with features such as a laptop sleeve, Dopp kit, and other extra organizers. At 11 pounds (5 kilograms), though, it's the heaviest here.

2. The Gentleman
If you prefer to cap the day's action with a button-down soiree, consider the Eagle Creek Overnight Tri-Fold Garment Bag ($200; www.eaglecreek.com), with internal pockets to accommodate EC's Pack-It system pouches. Your shirts will stay fresh-pressed and your weekend toys in place.

3. The Wanderer
More rhino skin than canvas and waxed with paraffin for water resistance, the burly 22-ounce (624-gram) cotton twill Filson Small Duffel Bag ($195; www.filson.com) might survive the rigors of travel better than you. Complaints? Only that it takes ages to break in.

4. The Athlete
The Osprey Vector 22" ($169; www.ospreypacks.com) borrows a simple yet clever concept from ski and surf bags: a separate section for dirty clothes and sneaks. The roller's stretchy front pocket and internal mesh compartments make item retrieval fast and easy.

5. The Free Spirit
Simple yet sophisticated, the two-and-a-half-pound (one-kilogram) Jansport All-Terra-24" Duffel Bag ($115; www.jansport.com) has a water-resistant lining and two zippered end pockets. Best feature: two well-padded backpack straps for comfy carrying.
