Village children were so curious about me that they followed me around whenever possible. This village
Odimba, located 20 miles [32 kilometers] from Kindu, was no exception. Here a girl carries her younger sibling on her back, securing her with a large rectangular piece of fabric called a
pagne. The girl also has a pagne wrapped around her as a dress. Women and girls often carry their children and siblings on their backs while performing their daily tasks
so that they can keep an eye on the youngest children at the same time. Simple chores, like making meals, can take several hours once you factor in gathering water, pounding flour, and making charcoal.
