This shot is of 700 non-food item kits unloaded from a plane that dropped them off in a rural part of Katanga Province.
These kits contain blankets, plasting sheeting, pots, jerry cans, and soap. Transporting the kits was our largest challenge for reaching displaced persons with assistance, because the road system in Congo is unbelievably bad. The roads more resemble mountain bike trails. Just one bridge being out can delay activities
for hours or even days. To further complicate things, the kits are very bulky because they contain pots and blankets. We were fortunate that the dirt runway in this area could handle small cargo planes. Otherwise we would have had to resort to the river or roads, which would have taken several weeks, as opposed to a few days.
