Luapa was the first village we visited inside the mostly unexplored lowland rain forest of Salonga National Park. Until John and I arrived, Jo was likely the only Westerner that these villagers had ever seen. Our arrival at the village was met with much celebration and wonder. The children in particular would hang around staring for hours at their strange-looking visitors. On our first morning in Luapa, Jo let her hair down causing great excitement among the assembled well wishers and gawkers.
