While the Iyalema people maintain many of their traditional beliefs and superstitions, their dress has followed the trend seen in much of the developing world; cheap, imported clothing has almost completely replaced traditional dress. The one exception I witnessed was among the women who are in walé. Women in walé decorate their faces and wear traditional dress for the period from the birth of their first child until the time when that child is able to walk.
