Congo Photo Gallery: Expedition Bonobo The only jungle dwellers more mysterious than the Iyaelima people are the rare bonobo apes that live alongside them. A perilous expedition into the Democratic Republic of the Congo hopes to establish contact that will help preserve them both. Photograph by Robert J. Ross
Jo, her trusted and capable assistant Mvula, and one of the trackers gaze up high into the canopy looking at wild bonobos. Nothing can capture the exhilaration of finally seeing our closest genetic relative in its natural environment. The excitement of the experience and the sounds of the bonobos calling in the forest will be with me for a lifetime. —Photographer Robert J. Ross
