The bonobos that we saw in Salonga National Park were high in the forest canopy. They initially ran from us but eventually stopped and stared down at us from the safety of the treetops. I don't know if it was a sense of curiosity or a sense of safety that prompted them to stop jumping from tree to tree and observe us. At Lola Ya Bonobo Sanctuary, I had the opportunity to observe bonobos up close and there is no doubt in my mind that they were as curious about me and my camera as I was about them.
