The ICCN guards stationed at Anga and in the villages that we would visit had not been paid in many months. We brought with us from Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC, a large suitcase full of Congolese notes in order to pay the personnel. Despite their minimal pay (averaging about 15 dollars a day), the largest Congolese note in circulation is worth about one dollar, so the volume of the smelly old currency needed for our expedition was enormous.
