Great excitement led up to the first shortwave radio transmission from Luapa to the outside world. Here, Jo listens anxiously as an ICCN guard makes history by talking with Kinshasa, while much of the village looks on from outside. In a time where cell phones, wireless Internet, and other means of modern communication are commonplace, it was fascinating to see the enthusiasm behind the installation of a simple radio.
