Salonga National Park covers about 14,000 densely forested square miles (36,000 square kilometers). The high canopy is thick and little sunlight made it down to the ground where we were walking. This was generally a blessing as the shade and reduced humidity kept us cool. Walking between Luapa and Iyamba we passed through a stretch of forest where the sun filtered through and brightened the greens a bit.
