The only jungle dwellers more mysterious than the Iyaelima people are the rare bonobo apes that live alongside them. A perilous expedition into the Democratic Republic of the Congo hopes to establish contact that will help preserve them both.   Photograph by Robert J. Ross

Keeping sophisiticated electronic camera equipment functioning in the hot, humid DRC environment was a challenge. We had to walk through muddy streams as many of the small bridges had rotted away and were more treacherous than walking barefoot through the murky water. Writer John Falk, pictured here, was a relative neophyte to camping and this sort of high adventure, but he seemed to enjoy most of the challenges that the environment threw at us.
