This is sunrise at Point Lenana, the third highest peak on Mount Kenya. This is the sort of high-atmosphere, equatorial lightshow that goes on in this part of the world.
Because Mount Kenya is a stand alone mountain, you can't possibly get any higher in the landscape than you are here. Your shadow gets cast across the glaciers and onto the rest of the mountain.
The only other feature was the two peaks of Kilimanjaro, poking up above the clouds, like a whale breaching on the ocean. It really was amazing to think of people on that peak there looking out at us. —Contributing Editor Matthew Power
