This is Alex Fiksman and me crossing the Lewis Glacier, which is one of many of retreating glaciers on Mount Kenya. Global warming has been taking quite a toll on tropical glaciers the world over. Particularly on Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro, which is obviously more well known.
It would have been nice to have crampons, ice axes, and ropes, but we didn't have any of that. We were just walking across the glaciers in our sneakers, which was probably the most dangerous thing we did the entire trip. It doesn't look that steep but if you fell, you would basically slide down to the snout of the glacier. —Contributing Editor Matthew Power
