This is the beginning of the bamboo forest, the first ecosystem we ecountered on our approach to Mount Kenya. When we first set out, we followed this route called the Burguret, which was used in the 40s and 50s, but has been very rarely used since. There were a lot of points where the trail just vanished. This bamboo grows really fast, so we were lucky to have elephant trails to follow. —Contributing Editor Matthew Power
