This is one of the 250 remaining elephants out of the more than 2,500 estimated to have lived in Gorongosa National Park before the war. In November 2005, the Carr Foundation, which is helping to revive the park through the removal of land mines and the promotion of ecotourism, joined the park's staff and experts from South Africa's Kruger National Park to spend two days darting large mammals from helicopters. Once the animal was out, a team of researchers would take blood samples and fit each creature with a satellite collar. This elephant's whereabouts can now be tracked online. —Photographer Paul Kerrison
