When spirit lions are thought to be attacking villagers, Ahmad Msham Namalenga, 39, a highly regarded Makonde mtaalam, or bush doctor, and lion trapper from Mtwara, the district south of Lindi, holds a gourd with lion's hair that he uses for "white magic."
Villagers believe that spirit lions are a supernatural force in the shape of a lion. Through the use of black magic, it's said that these spirit lions attack and eat enemy villagers. Here, the spiritual world is a very real part of life. The dead are considered to be as powerful as the living. —Contributing Photographer Ami VitaleRead the "Stalking the Spirit Lions" article >>
