Stalking Tanzania's Man-Eating Lions
Nature's most efficient predators are hunting down the people of southern Tanzania. These cats are cunning, hungry, and—some believe—not of this world.

When spirit lions are thought to be attacking villagers, Ahmad Msham Namalenga, 39, a highly regarded Makonde mtaalam, or bush doctor, and lion trapper from Mtwara, the district south of Lindi, holds a gourd with lion's hair that he uses for "white magic."
Villagers believe that spirit lions are a supernatural force in the shape of a lion. Through the use of black magic, it's said that these spirit lions attack and eat enemy villagers. Here, the spiritual world is a very real part of life. The dead are considered to be as powerful as the living.
