Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

The Spot: Sundown at Arrow Glacier Camp, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

The Moment: One of the best parts about climbing Kiliminjaro is that all the guides and porters are Tanzanians. So, while the goal is Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point (at 19,340 feet [5,895 meters]), the gift is a crash course in Kiswahili, the tribal languages and traditions of the Maasai and Chagga, and some fine-grained analysis of the East African Football Conference. Pictured is Leonard, a guide with African Environments / Mountain Madness.

This picture was taken the evening before the first ascent of the Western Breach to Crater Camp in over two years—it had been off-limits due to a deadly rockslide in 2005. Today, there are no deep snowfields here at Arrow Glacier Camp, 16,200 feet (4,938 meters). You have to climb another 2,000-plus feet to Crater Camp to just see the famous snows of Kilimanjaro. Many of the porters still remember Arrow Glacier—the peak's snow has receded dramatically only in the past five to seven years.

Do-It-Yourself: Mountain Madness (
www.mountainmaddness.com) was the guiding organization. They do a tremendous job on Kilimanjaro.
