The Moment: I took the photo in the summer of 2007 about an hour after dawn, facing south as the marine layer (fog) from the Monterey Bay blew in over the foothills. I was approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 meters) east of the headquarters of Henry Coe State Park starting a 15-mile (24-meter) loop over Mount Sizer.
This enormous park is located just south of San Jose and within easy reach of over a million people. However, the park is so underutilized that it may be closed this year due to the state budget crisis. I hoped the photo might inspire some to realize that there are amazing adventures not just around the world, but in our own backyard.
