The third day of our sea kayaking trip near Loreto, in Baja California, dawned serenely. Our lead
guide, Nadia, scrambled to the top of a small cliff
and scanned the horizon anxiously. "We're not
going," she announced, "the wind will pick up and
it will be too rough." By mid-morning the wind was
howling, and we were officially landlocked.

Undaunted, our assistant guide, Vladimir (pictured),
decided to try some kayak surfing. He kept us well
entertained as he sliced through the breakers and
occasionally rolled in the shallows. Here, he paddles out to catch the next big one.

DIY: My husband and I had a great experience with the guides from Paddling South (www.paddlingsouth.com). Our group of ten adventurers and three guides launched from Puerto Escondido and paddled south for the next six days. Highlights from the trip include: learning how to anchor a tent in beach sand; marveling at bioluminescent waves; soaking in the hot springs near Punta El Carrizalito; and kayaking in the shadows of the Sierra Gigantes.

Judge's Remarks:

This photo has great composition and tells a story as well. The good morning light, the water spray, and the bow jutting out of the water enhances the moment the kayaker breaks through the ocean surf. Catching the right moment is the challenge of action photography.
