Send in your photos >> | Here, my dear friend Ernesto and I were paragliding over Amelia Island, Florida. Today a seven-pound backpack conveniently carries your fabric wings. Paragliding represents the pure essence of human flight. Up in the air, time stops and your mind is blown away by the beauty of a spectacular view. Beware, paragliding is addictive, once you try it once there is no permanent return to the ground. For me, this picture conveys it all. —Manuel Albert, 47 Sales Atlanta, Georgia
Judge's Remarks: This is a great shot that really shows the landscape. It would have been nice to see more takes from this location with the paraglider positioned over more interesting terrain. —Bill Hatcher, photographer and author of the National Geographic Photography Field Guide: Action & Adventure
DIY: Amelia Island is a wild area. It's rare to see other paragliders. But beware: numerous sharks swim the waters just off the beaches. Best way to find how to learn about safe paragliding schools and tandem discovery flights is at www.ushga.org.
Our November 2006 issue features the best new adventure travel trips; an exclusive look inside Iran; a Greenland global warming report; backcountry spas; digital cameras; travel Web sites; weekend getaways; and more.
