It's Ireland's Gilded Age! So go on: Surf a mythic 40-foot (12-meter) break, kayak the crystalline coastline, and hike the unmarked wilds. But please, for your own good, don't step in the fairy blood.   Photograph by Alex di Suvero

This was an afternoon pint served in the sun with a shrimp sandwich. Everyone thinks Guinness is synonymous with Ireland, and it is. But I learned locals in West Cork feel that Murphy's is the preferred stout and that Guinness is for the simple folk who don't know better....

To my tastebuds, side-by-side, I could hardly tell the difference. I just wanted to go local and fit in with the crowd, so I drank mostly Murphy's while there. I have never been much of a dark beer man, but it does taste different there, like people say. The fresh stout out of the keg in Ireland is the perfect beverage for tasty, comfort food.

Unfortunately stout doesn't travel well. Back here stateside, I can now say that I can enjoy a Guinness, but it's not the same as the fairy nectar they call stout in Ireland.
