Inside the Extreme Ice Survey

James Balog, Columbia Glacier calving event, Alaska

The Columbia Glacier, Alaska, May 15, 2007, 6:00 a.m.

The aftermath of one of the largest calving events ever recorded shows just how dramatic the loss: floating ice fills the fjord and is quickly carried by the tide out to sea. The red line indicates Columbia's extent just 11 hours earlier. Balog will eventually stitch all of his images together to form a one-of-a-kind time-lapse documentary film.

See the feature story and photographs in "Portrait of a Meltdown" in our October 2007 issue.
