Bungee jump off a bridge. Fly a helicopter toward a sheer mountain wall. Paddle frothing white water. Tim Cahill explores New Zealand's South Island, the undisputed home to all activities energized. Photograph by Peter McBride
Keas are extremely curious, brave birds. They travel in "gangs" and are famous for stealing anything they can get their talons on. After slowly crawling up to these two one cold morning, they became feisty. One decided he wanted my camera strap and even tried to bite it. Later when we left in a helicopter, another kea decided it would attack the skis of the helicopter as we took off, while clinging to a clump of grass with his beak. It seems the keas seek adrenaline just as much as the resident humans on the island. —Contributing Photographer Peter McBride
