This takeoff picture shows the audacity of Kiwi pilots. In order to land on this grass strip, pilots must make a 180-degree turn just as their wheels liftoff on takeoff; otherwise they will hit a box canyon wall. Adventure writer Tim Cahill and I nearly had to duck as this pilot arced past us just 20 feet [6 meters] off the deck.
