Bungee jump off a bridge. Fly a helicopter toward a sheer mountain wall. Paddle frothing white water. Tim Cahill explores New Zealand's South Island, the undisputed home to all activities energized. Photograph by Peter McBride
This takeoff picture shows the audacity of Kiwi pilots. In order to land on this grass strip, pilots must make a 180-degree turn just as their wheels liftoff on takeoff; otherwise they will hit a box canyon wall. Adventure writer Tim Cahill and I nearly had to duck as this pilot arced past us just 20 feet [6 meters] off the deck. —Contributing Photographer Peter McBride
